Dr. Robert M. Oneal was a visionary pioneer and esteemed foundational figure in plastic and reconstructive surgery whose legacy profoundly shaped the medical community in Ann Arbor. After earning his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, Dr. Oneal completed his comprehensive general and plastic surgery residencies at the University of Michigan. In 1969, he established his private practice at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital—an institution that evolved into the renowned Center for Plastic Surgery Ann Arbor. Beyond his exceptional clinical skill in complex procedures such as cleft lip repair, rhinoplasty, and breast reconstruction, Dr. Oneal was a deeply dedicated educator. As a clinical professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School, he spent decades mentoring generations of residents and colleagues who remember him as a compassionate teacher defined by integrity, warmth, and intellectual rigor.
