Dr. M. Haskell "Hack" Newman was a distinguished and nationally renowned plastic surgeon, educator, and leader who dedicated his career to advancing pediatric and craniofacial reconstruction. Hailing from a proud multi-generation medical family rooted in Oklahoma, Dr. Newman pursued his medical degree at the University of Tennessee before establishing his lifelong academic and clinical home at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Driven by a deep commitment to correcting congenital birth defects and traumatic injuries, he completed rigorous dual residencies in otorhinolaryngology and plastic surgery, followed by a specialized fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the University of Toronto. For decades, Dr. Newman served as Professor and Chief of Pediatric and Craniofacial Plastic Surgery at Michigan Medicine, where he profoundly shaped the field through his meticulous surgical technique and compassionate mentorship. Beyond his clinical practice, which spanned complex cleft lip and palate care, adult maxillofacial surgery, and aesthetic procedures like rhinoplasty, he held prominent leadership roles, including serving as president of the Rhinoplasty Society and the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons.
