Biography

Dr. Robert J. Wilensky is a distinguished physician and historian whose multifaceted career bridges frontline military medicine and academic scholarship. Graduating with his M.D. from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in 1966, Dr. Wilensky went on to serve with distinction as a battalion medical officer in Vietnam during 1967 and 1968, an experience that profoundly shaped his perspective on trauma, altruism, and medical policy. Board certified in both general surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery, he established a respected presence in the Washington medical community, earning recognition as an outstanding plastic surgeon by Washingtonian Magazine. Driven by a deep intellectual curiosity regarding the intersection of healthcare and conflict, he later pursued advanced graduate studies, earning a Ph.D. in History from American University in 2000. He has shared his wealth of knowledge as an educator with institutions such as American University, George Mason University, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, while also contributing significantly to the Historical Section of the Office of the Surgeon General of the Army.
