Dr. Leonard J. Weiner was a true pioneer and Renaissance man who left an indelible mark on the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Serving courageously as a combat surgeon in Vietnam and demonstrating early excellence as a pitcher for the UCLA baseball team, he brought that same remarkable dedication, precision, and passion into his medical career. As the inaugural Chief of Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville from 1971 to 1996, Dr. Weiner established the institution's plastic surgery residency program and mentored generations of surgeons who would go on to shape the specialty. A visionary leader, he was instrumental in introducing groundbreaking techniques such as modern liposuction from France and helping initiate the plastic surgery resident match, alongside foundational advancements in microsurgery and burn care. Known for his warmth, intellect, and profound commitment to patient care and teaching, Dr. Weiner's legacy endures through the thousands of lives he touched, the countless trainees he inspired, and the enduring standards of excellence he championed throughout his distinguished life and career.
