Biography

Dr. Jean J. Labelle was a pioneering plastic and reconstructive surgeon whose distinguished career left a lasting mark on generations of medical professionals. Born in Montreal and trained across Canada and the United States—including a general surgical residency in Detroit and a plastic surgery fellowship at McGill University—Dr. Labelle established his roots in Maine in the early 1970s. Driven by a vision for accessible, high-standard ambulatory care, he co-founded one of the region's earliest outpatient surgical facilities, Plastic and Hand Surgical Associates, in South Portland. Beyond his surgical precision and dedication to his patients, he was known as a warm mentor who generously encouraged young trainees to pursue the specialty. An accomplished woodworker in his personal life, Dr. Labelle approached both his craft and his profession with meticulous care, integrity, and a profound respect for human connection. His legacy continues to endure through the community he served and the many surgeons he inspired throughout his remarkable career.
