Dr. Hans R. Wilhelmsen was a distinguished plastic and reconstructive surgeon who dedicated four decades of his life to a private practice in Towson, Maryland. Born in Tjome, Norway, Dr. Wilhelmsen immigrated to the United States after World War II, arriving in Baltimore with remarkable resilience and determination. Inspired along his journey to pursue both dental and medical sciences, he earned his dental degree from the University of Maryland in 1959 and his medical degree from the same institution in 1963. He subsequently completed his plastic surgery fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Wilhelmsen served as chief of surgery at St. Joseph, Maryland General, Kernan, and Mercy Hospitals, and shared his vast knowledge as an assistant professor of medicine emeritus in the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University. Known for his deep commitment to his patients, his community, and the advancement of surgical science, his legacy continues to inspire the medical field, notably honored through the annual Hans R. Wilhelmsen Lectureship in Craniofacial Sciences.
