About the Procedure

Introduction

Introduction

Eyelid Surgery Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. Eyelid surgery can improve the appearance of the eyes and make them look more youthful. It can also improve vision by removing excess skin that is blocking the eyelashes.

Benefits of Eyelid Surgery

  • Improved appearance of the eyes
  • More youthful appearance
  • Improved vision
  • Reduced wrinkles and sagging skin
  • Boosted self-confidence

Risks of Eyelid Surgery

  • Bleeding
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Vision changes

Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are people who are in good overall health and who have realistic expectations about the results of surgery. The best candidates are people who have:
  • Excess skin and fat on the upper or lower eyelids
  • Droopy eyelids that are blocking vision
  • Wrinkles and sagging skin around the eyes
  • A desire to improve their appearance

What to Expect During Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning that you will be able to go home the same day. The surgery takes about 1-2 hours to complete. During surgery, the surgeon will make an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid or just below the lash line of the lower eyelid. The surgeon will then remove excess skin and fat from the eyelid. The incision will be closed with sutures.

Recovery from Eyelid Surgery

After eyelid surgery, you will experience some swelling and bruising around the eyes. This is normal and will gradually subside over time. You will need to keep the incisions clean and dry and avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks. You will also need to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun. Most people are able to return to work or school within a week after eyelid surgery. However, it may take several months for the swelling and bruising to completely resolve.

Results of Eyelid Surgery

The results of eyelid surgery are long-lasting. Most people enjoy improved appearance and vision for many years after surgery. However, it is important to note that eyelid surgery cannot stop the aging process. As you age, you may eventually need to have eyelid surgery again.

Things to know before start

Preoperative Preparation for Eyelid Surgery

Before Surgery:

  • Medical Evaluation: Have a thorough examination with your doctor to discuss your medical history, current medications, and any allergies or underlying conditions.
  • Physical Exam: Your doctor will examine your eyelids, including their shape, position, and function. They may also take measurements to determine the extent of surgery needed.
  • Eye Exam: An ophthalmologist will perform an eye exam to assess your vision, corneal health, and tear production.
  • Discuss Expectations: Clearly communicate your goals and expectations for surgery with your doctor.
  • Stop Smoking: Smoking can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications. Quit smoking at least 6-8 weeks before surgery.
  • Avoid Certain Medications: Your doctor may ask you to stop taking medications that can increase bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood thinners.
  • Plan for Recovery: Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and help you with daily activities during the recovery period.

Day of Surgery:

  • Fasting: Avoid food and drink for at least 8 hours before surgery, or as instructed by your doctor.
  • Remove Contact Lenses: If you wear contact lenses, remove them before surgery.
  • Medications: Take any medications prescribed by your doctor as directed.
  • Clothing: Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
  • Arrive Early: Arrive at the surgical center or hospital on time for your scheduled appointment.

Postoperative Care:

  • Eye Patch: You will likely have an eye patch over the treated eye for a few days after surgery.
  • Pain Control: Take pain medication as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Keep Wounds Clean: Gently clean the incision sites with a sterile solution as directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid Strenuous Activity: Rest as much as possible for the first few days after surgery. Avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, or doing strenuous exercise.
  • Elevate Head: When sleeping or resting, elevate your head to reduce swelling.
  • Protect the Eyes: Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from sunlight and wind.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.
