Biography

Dr. Eugene F. Worthen was a pioneering trailblazer in reconstructive and plastic surgery, dedicating his life's work to serving the community of Monroe, Louisiana, and beyond. Born and raised in Monroe, Dr. Worthen pursued his medical degree at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, graduating in 1948. His early medical career was punctuated by honorable service as a surgeon in the United States Air Force during the Korean War era, where he acted as Chief of Surgery for the 73rd Air Depot Wing in France. Returning to civilian life, he completed rigorous postgraduate training before establishing his practice in Monroe in 1958, where he remained a steadfast medical fixture until his retirement. For many years, Dr. Worthen was famously the only board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Louisiana outside of New Orleans. Deeply compassionate and community-minded, he partnered with the Louisiana Crippled Children Program to establish the region's first dedicated cleft lip and palate team, personally correcting over 700 cases and profoundly changing the lives of countless children and families. Beyond his surgical prowess, he was a respected leader in organized medicine, serving as president of the Louisiana State Medical Society and the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Worthen left an indelible legacy of clinical excellence, leadership, and heartfelt community care.
